how to spice up your holiday attire!
The holidays are upon us and if you are like me, you are scrambling to line up your outfits for all those holiday gatherings! I love getting dressed up so much because as you all know, I wear socially acceptable pajamas aka scrubs to work and I don’t really get a chance to express myself. So if there is any chance to “be fabulous darling”, I take it! I want to just talk about a handful of ways to spice up your holiday attire. These are easy and attainable ways to be a part of the season with the pomp and circumstance of sequins and glitter without looking tacky and gaudy. Scroll down for more…

sequins
Anytime I think of the holidays, I immediately think, sequins. There are a few occasions in life were a full sequin number is perfectly appropriate and the holidays is just one of those times. I think that if you are going to reach for sequins, let that be the stand out piece of your whole look. I think we start to run into problems when we have too many things vying for the top spot in the totality of a look and thats were we go from classic and chic to gaudy and over the top. For example, I have opted for a long sleeved, loosely fitting sequin dress. I have paired it will simple long and wavy hair, muted over the knee boots, and a subtle red lip. The make up isn’t over the top but is appropriate.
glitter, metallics, and satin
Not everyone is into sequins and I am totally understanding of that. I think to feel like you are in holiday attire, you absolutely must have some sort of glittery, shimmery, or metallic item going on somewhere on your look as a woman. A fabric for women that has me going crazy currently is satin. Satin not only has this luxurious feel, but it can be draped and still allow some forgiveness with our curves. Something about the holidays screams luxury so I think as a society we tend to look for those materials and fabrics that emulate luxury. If you opt for a monochrome satin dress, you can use accessories to add that ‘pop’ one needs to stand out. Glitter and metallics done right can also be luxurious. These materials work well for shoes and accessories. You can find clothing that has metallic threading through it and that too is gorgeous. You also can find clothing items that have glitter sprinkled here and there that can be a “look”. The overall message here is don’t overdue it and always find the one thing that will stand out and try not to have your own clothing and accessory pieces compete with one another.

Velvet
I can’t possibly have a holiday post and not talk about velvet. Actually, this sequin dress that I have on is sequins on velvet. I love velvet so much but I find that the fabric itself is not very forgiving so wearing it looser on my mid size body is best. Velvet is a gorgeous fabric that just always feels classic. You really have to go out of your way to look tacky in the material. And that is something I love about velvet. It is a job to try and not do it right.

I hope you all are having an amazing holiday season so far. I thoroughly enjoy this time of the year so much. Christmas is always a strange time for me though because growing up in Zimbabwe, Christmas was all about family and specifically my dad’s side of the family. I unfortunately don’t have a relationship with most of that side of the family anymore but now that I am married, I am eager to start new traditions. Furthermore, even though Christmas since my teens was always about me, my mom, and my brothers, we have always maintained a close relationship and strong family ties in our unit. Thats what the holidays are about for me, celebrating with family and spending that quality time together. Until next time loves, big bisous!
